Kilian Breen & Lisa Demiray
The winning couple,
Lisa Demiray & Kilian Breen

Their Story:...

“Take good care of my daughter.” My dad said this to my fiance Kilian during the two short months we had left with him after his diagnosis with pancreatic cancer. Losing your father at any age is devastating, but at 23 years old, it was tragic. Although I had lost the most important man in my life, I still had my best friend, my love, my Kilian.

Kilian has been one of my best friends since middle school. We were introduced when I was 13 years old by my older sister, Tania. Although Kilian and I went to different schools, we were always close. Hanging out in my basement, Kilian grew to be a part of the family. It wasn’t until our first encounter with tragedy though that we finally fell in love.

In June 2004, Kilian was in a motorcycle accident that took his best friend Justin’s life. Between losing Justin and my dad, Kilian and I experienced heart ache no one ever should and yet we grew together as we shared our hope, friendship, and most of all, love. Kilian and I have supported each other through the most difficult times in both our lives, proving that the cliché saying “love conquers all” is true.

Even with the strength I have gained from Kilian, I still struggle with moments of grief and weddings are absolutely gut-wrenching. It is very emotional for me to see fathers walk arm-in-arm with the bride down the aisle or dance together. I know my dream of sharing my wedding day with my dad will never be a reality. But I will have my Kilian. I know that if we are the lucky ones chosen to win this wedding it is due to my father’s strength and love for me and his way of contributing to our wedding. And I know that for the rest of my life, Kilian will fulfill my dad’s last wish, and take good care of me.
