High School Internship

The Long Island Aquarium (LIA) offers internship opportunities with the Aquarium’s education department. The mission of the internship program to allow the student to experience various aspects of marine science through the perspective of the marine educator. We hope to encourage the participants to develop as environmental communicators who can synthesize, translate, and disseminate important information about the marine environment.

Interns are teamed up with education department staff members who will mentor throughout the internship experience. Mentors will ensure that all interns receive written information, learn how the aquarium operates and provide personal experience in regard to the pursuit of a career in marine science.  All interns work with the public at our interactive touch tanks. Interns will develop public speaking skills by learning and giving lectures done at certain habitats during operating hours.

Students interested in applying for the program should send the following materials: a brief resume with contact information including any work, volunteer experience, and school activities, a brief letter of interest explaining why they would like to intern at LIA, and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, school administrator, or an adult other than a parent, guardian, or relative.

Interns will be assigned a weekly schedule in order to complete required hours.  Internships last a minimum of 120 hours or follow the school’s requirements if different from LIA.  All LIA internships are unpaid.  The aquarium is open year-round except for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Transportation is the responsibility of the intern.

LIA is recognized by the Long Island Works Coalition as an outstanding partner providing career mentoring to the young people of Long Island.
