Assistant Keeper – Keeper 1, Bird and Reptile Team
Under the supervision of our Senior Curator of Mammals, Birds and Reptiles and Assistant Curator of Penguins and Reptiles, the Assistant Bird and Reptile keeper is responsible for providing daily husbandry to our collection of birds and reptiles. This could include one or more of the following species: African Black Footed Penguins, Green Aracaris, Green Iguanas, Argentine Tegu, Burmese Python and assorted smaller reptile species. This includes but is not limited to daily observations, preparing and feeding diets, ensuring animal health, providing enrichment, cleaning and maintaining both public viewable habitats and behind the scenes areas, record keeping, narrating public presentations, as well as interacting with and educating guests.
The employee will assist senior staff in one or more animal areas as needed and as directed by the Senior Curator and Assistant Curator.
The employee will perform additional duties as needed to ensure the welfare of all animals under the care of the Long Island Aquarium and as directed by the Senior Curator and Assistant Curator.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Zoology or related field or equivalent experience.
- Ability to work independently and as a team.
- Minimum 1 year of paid full-time experience in the care and husbandry of penguins.
- Open water SCUBA certification preferred but not required.
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Must be able to walk, stand, bend, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to work in and around cold water.
- Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Must be willing to work days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be able to work with chemicals and follow MSDS protocols.
- Must be able to read, write and speak in English and be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.
- Must possess quick reflexes and be able to react quickly to changing animal situations.
Essential Duties:
- Maintain excellent communication with supervisors, other team Members, and veterinarians.
- Observe animals and report health or behavioral related issues to supervisors and veterinarians.
- Complete all opening and closing responsibilities on assigned areas and habitats daily.
- Perform habitat maintenance and cleaning.
- Prepare animal diets and medications.
- Feed and administer medications to collection animals as needed.
- Interpret animal behavior and make decisions appropriately with supervision of director and senior staff.
- Create and provide daily enrichment
- Keep records of daily animal husbandry
- Participate in animal restraint, moves, and transport operations.
- Perform presentations as well as host educational lectures, tours, animal encounters and programs as assigned.
- Represent the Animal Department and Long Island Aquarium in a positive manner.
- Adhere to all USDA regulations and guidelines.
- Follow all policies and procedures of the Long Island Aquarium.
- Work as a team to manage and provide for all animals under our care, and to represent the aquarium in a positive and educational manner.

Lifeguards
Job Summary Full- and part-time positions available for pool certified lifeguards for interactive Snorkel Adventure!
Program runs June 25th through September 1st and the hours are from 10:30am-4:30pm daily.
Responsibilities: Ensure guest safety, keep area neat and clean, swim tests for guests.
Qualifications: Must have current lifeguard, CPR and First Aid Certification; Able to work weekends and holidays.
Pay: $16.50 per hour.
This is a small pool filled with tropical fish, stingrays, and other aquatic animals. We have live mermaids in the tank twice a week. There is a 16 maximum attendee count.

Curator of Fish and Invertebrates
Job Description
Curator of Fish and Invertebrates reports directly to the Executive Director of the Long Island Aquarium and supervises the daily operation of the Fish Department to ensure safe and proper implementation of established protocols for the management and maintenance of the animal collection, exhibits, and associated animal facilities and service areas. This position oversees a team of aquarists and life support operators and works in conjunction with the Senior Mammal, Bird and Reptile Curator.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Direct staff to achieve goals and objectives for short- and long-term operations.
- Manage direct reports including evaluating performance, coaching, advancement, hiring and accountability resulting in high-performance maintenance, growth and/or dismissal.
- Manage other Aquarium teams when the direct manager is unavailable, as requested.
- Operates as mentor and resource to the Fish Department with demonstrated knowledge in aquatic animal care, life support systems, and water quality.
- Develop and implement innovative animal care strategies, exhibit techniques, and LSS systems.
- Assumes project manager role when needed for major exhibit or life support renovations.
- Responsible for ordering materials to ensure that adequate supplies and equipment exist.
- Represents the fish department in various interdepartmental capacities as needed.
- Participate in daily advanced animal husbandry techniques and assessments related to food, water, cleanliness, health, animal transfers and behavior.
- Develops collection and captive management planning.
- Conduct regular observations of animal health, behavior, and welfare to include disease detection and formal animal welfare assessments. Diagnose and respond to animal health issues or welfare concerns.
- Identify and recommend changes to husbandry and habitat protocols that improve standards and eliminate animal welfare concerns.
- Document husbandry tasks, animal observations, animal health records, animal welfare assessments and other animal transactions.
- Monitor and analyze water quality of habitats, and other assigned areas and determine adjustments where necessary.
- Perform habitat maintenance SCUBA/Hookah dives.
- Training new and current staff members on new tasks.
- Perform routine inspection and maintenance on mechanical systems and equipment, including but not limited to, fractionators, mechanical filters, UV sterilizers, small pumps, and habitat lighting systems.
- Ability to work with aquarium chemotherapeutics and other chemicals.
- Ability to perform precise chemical measurements and dosing while adhering to all safety protocols.
- Assist in veterinary medical procedures, provide medication and treatment as directed by veterinary staff and curator.
- Liaise with professional colleagues as a representative of the aquarium.
Knowledge and Skills
- Extensive knowledge of taxonomy of marine and freshwater fish and invertebrates.
- Advanced understanding of animal food preparation, nutrition, and feeding techniques.
- Extensive knowledge of water quality chemistry as it pertains to aquarium systems.

- 6+ years experience working at a public/private aquarium in a senior or managerial role.
- Extensive experience in the care and maintenance of a wide variety of fish and invertebrates.
- Extensive experience and proficiency in the capture, handling, transfer and transportation of fish and invertebrates.
- Experience in project leadership and exhibit/life support renovations.
- Possesses experience and knowledge towards disease and treatment of animals along with performing necropsy.
- Knowledge of collection planning processes.
- Working knowledge of the use of SCUBA to maintain aquatic animals and habitats; must possess current SCUBA certification from a professionally recognized SCUBA certifying agency.
- Must have good organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays. Must respond to emergency calls involving but not limited to animal related, diver related or life support.

Part-Time Dock Hand
Job Description:
Seasonal (May – October) part-time dockhands needed. Dockhands are responsible for the safe mooring of boats and general operations of the docks by facilitating and assisting in coordinating the arrival and departure of boats. Also required to assist with rentals (canoe/kayak/sup) as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists members and customers load and unload belongings to and from vessels.
- Ensures docks, equipment, and facilities are clean, safe, and operational at all times.
- Operates and pumps fuel in a safe and cautious manner.
- Communicates by radio with staff on vessels being launched or returned.
- Pumps out vessels safely.
- Assist members with requests such as ice and fuel.
- Assists with loading and unloading of rentals (canoe/kayak/sup).
- Follow all company policies and procedures to ensure a safe work environment.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills is needed.
- Proven to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work in a high performance team environment.
Working Conditions :
- Regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions.

Long Island Aquarium Dive Instructor- Part-time (as needed)
Position Summary: Delivers the Shark Dive Program to our guests. LIA Dive Instructor ensures that the program is run safely, efficiently, and that the guest experience is held to high standards. LIA Dive Instructor will conduct the program in accordance with the Long Island Aquarium protocols and procedures to ensure the safety of our guests, our staff, and our animals. LIA Dive Instructor will help ensure that that program is engaging with a priority on guest services, satisfaction, and safety.
Responsibilities:
- Responsible for delivery of our Shark Dive Program and guest experience.
- Maintains the highest level of safety and quality of the Shark dive program.
- Has the ability to participate in training classes with our education department.
- Sets up and inspects all dive equipment to ensure it is all within proper operating parameters prior to the dives.
- Breaks down and cleans all dive equipment post dives.
- Adheres to safety procedures and protocols set by the Long Island Aquarium.
- Demonstrates a comprehensive and advanced knowledge of recreational diving.
- Maintains the highest standards of work area cleanliness.
- Communicates well with other departments to maintain standards of quality.
Qualifications:
- Has a Dive Instructor certification that is up to date and of teaching status.

Physical Demands & Work Environment:
The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Program description:
The dive program is run with 2 guests and the dive instructor in our shark cage, and we host up to 8 people per session, so 4 consecutive 20-minute dives. During the off season, the program is offered daily except Tuesday/ Wednesday and Summer season it is offered daily. It is classified as a discover SCUBA program, so uncertified divers can participate the experience.
How the program is run:
- Guest arrive around 10:45 am and the program starts at 11:00am.
- An educator greets the guests and gives them brief tour of some of the habitats with sharks.
- The educator brings guests up the shark cage where they are handed over to the dive instructors.
- Dive instructors then give the divers a briefing about what to expect, what to do/ not do, and some basic safety instruction.
- After briefing the instructors get divers fitted with wetsuits and shoes and give divers approximate dive times to be ready to go.
- First guests get changed and ready to go, divers are set up with a weight harness and brought into the cage. (first divers are usually in the water by 12:00)
- Instructors help divers on with a guardian full face mask.
- Once instructor and divers are ready, they are moved to the center of the shark tank where they are slowly lowered into the tank.
- Cage makes first stop at chest height of shortest diver. At this point instructors will bring guests one at a time under water facing the instructor to assure the mask is fit well and give divers a chance to get used to the mask and breathing underwater.
- Once divers and instructor are comfortable the cage will be lowered further into the water stopping once the top of the cage is at the surface of the water.
- Education team watches time and dive is about 20 minutes from the point divers hit the water.

- Guardian Full Face Mask (GFFM)
- Second stage regulator with 6 ft hose attached to first stage in GFFM
- Full communication system within the masks to speak with each other and our education team member.
- SPG
- Dive cylinder (attached to the corner side of the cage)

Position Title: Line/Prep Cook
Associate is responsible for ensuring that all meals coming from the kitchen are well-prepared and presented, and that all food safety procedures are followed.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare food by: using knives to cut, chop and slice, lifting packaged food items, food preparation such as roasting meats, grilling chicken and making sauces, checking in, separating, and stocking food deliveries, producing orders according to standards.
- Cleaning up by: wiping down equipment, cleaning grill, moving equipment and sweeping and mopping.
- Complete all tasks as directed by management.
- Follow all Resort policies and procedures.
Job Requirements:
- 1-2 years of cooking experience
- Ability to work broiler, use fry and sauté stations.
- Basic knowledge of soups and sauces and the ability to prepare items.
- Must be able to follow directions well while under pressure.
- Must assist in keeping food costs low by minimizing waste.
- Must have good knowledge of all sanitation and safety regulations by the date and the company.
- Must be able to provide guest service delivery according to company standards.
