Long Island Aquarium is more than a fascinating place to explore – and experience – the wonders of the sea. It’s also a place committed to preserving and protecting marine life of all types.

Long Island Aquarium is home to the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, New York State’s only authorized stranding and research facility. The not-for-profit Foundation is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of seals, sea turtles, whales, dolphins, and porpoises – critically endangered species facing the real threat of extinction.

The Foundation’s educational efforts are dedicated to informing the public about our marine environment and the ways in which all of us can aid in its preservation. The Foundation engages in tours of the facility, lectures, seal cruises, ecology walks, and beach cleanups to foster good stewardship of the environment.

You can view stranded sea turtles, seals, or other marine animals on the mend at the Foundation’s “hospital,” located within Long Island Aquarium.

And if you’d like to help the Foundation carry out its important mission, here are two steps you can take:

  • Call the Foundation’s 24-hour stranding hotline at 631.369.9829 if you ever encounter a sick or stranded marine mammal or sea turtle;
  • Make a donation by calling 631.369.9840.
